Lil Yogi's: Detroit & Houston

"Education is the movement from Dark to Light. - Allan Bloom

This past Spring I completed my Kids Yoga Teacher certification under Cassie Hurst at Big Power Yoga. As I have mentioned before I decided to use my Yoga Certification to teach because I wanted to bring Yoga, the practice and philosophy, to my community.

I won't lie though. The people I want to bring it too are the MOST resistant.

Yoga vs. Religion is the BIGGEST topic as to why someone has not ever tried yoga. Ironically, those same people aren't even as religion as they portray themselves as - BUT that's another blog post.

That led me to Kids Yoga. Catch them before the world has told them what yoga is and who should be doing it.

Almost immediately after Graduating with my certification, I began planning an additional Pop-Up in Detroit, but for the kiddos. I selected ages 3-5 for the class because I have a lot of "nieces and nephews" that fall in that in that age category and I didn't want to teach a "flow" per say, but play with yogic principles involved.

I am grateful for my cousins because they let me use their yard for the class, and of course as nature would have it it rained that day and we had to move the class inside. The gratitude went up a notch, because we had to move the class inside.

Introducing Sun A's with the Parachute Game

I formatted the class to start with a Name Game, followed by The Parachute Game to introduce the concept of Sun A's and linking breath with movement.

Inhale as you rise, Exhale as you fold.

With each inhale we lifted the parachute to say, "Hi" to the Sun and as we exhaled we folded saying, "Bye" to the Sun.

We did a few rounds of that before moving on to a more active exercise: DANCE/FREEZE.

In this class, I knew their were some Lil Yogi's that attended class with their parents. So, I told the class we were going to dance to music and when the music stopped they had to FREEZE and if they knew a yoga pose to try one.

I threw that Gracie's Corner on, and the kids got HYPE. I purposely planned Story Time after that to wind the kids down to prepare for their Savasana. I read, The Sour Grape by Jory John and My Voice is a Trumpet by Jimmie Allen. OHEMGEE, both books were amazing. The lesson and how the stories were told were amazing. They are both books on mindfulness and being an advocate. All yogic principles. Check them out for your Lil Yogi's and McBooksters.

Story Time before Savasana

Overall, it was a SUCCESS!! and next time I go back home to Detroit I want to do another class for older kids to introduce them to the actual asana practice.

I set up a small sample of official Aum Yoga Merchandise as well.

Before I left for Detroit, a dear friend of mine in Houston made a social media post asking his friends if they could come to the Summer Camp he was running, Peace Camp at Mission Milby, and teach a skill. I reached out and asked about teaching yoga.

This was a fun experience and reminded me that as a former middle school teacher, I have the ability to engage all levels of yogis. I look forward to expanding my teaching practice and the communities I touch.

If you are in the Houston area, and looking to hire a yoga teacher for an event. I am certified in a view modalities, and specialize in Power and Gentle flows.
