“The beauty of a circle lies in its completeness; every end is a new beginning, creating an endless cycle of opportunities.”
by S.L. Jordan
I had a full circle moment of my own recently. I really like how the universe is not only responding to the energy I am putting out, but presenting me with opportunities that align with my goals. The opportunity to teach at The University of Houston was just that, alignment and energy coming together for me.
I've mentioned before how I didn't get my Yoga Teacher certification to teach, but to just deepen my own understanding. Yet, here I am - teaching. The added bonus is being able to introduce the practice of yoga and its benefits to people who look like me.
Earlier last month I was contacted via email by a young lady from The University of Houston about coming to teach yoga. I was ecstatic for a few reasons. Mainly, because after Hurricane Katrina UH was one of the few colleges accepting students during the fall semester of 2005 without transcripts! I finished my collegiate education at UH. Secondly, because I knew I would be doing exactly what I said I wanted to do, bringing yoga to my community. As odd as it MAY sound to some, being a Black Yoga teacher is important. It creates a feeling of safety for other Black Yogi's, it speaks to the inclusivity and decolonization of Westernized Yoga. #IAmBlackAndITeachYoga
Lastly, she found me using the #BlackGirlYogaHouston hashtag on Instagram. Further validation that you never know WHO is watching and to KEEP posting content consistently.
If you have been in Houston for the last decade, you can speak to the changes to the UH Campus. Honestly, it doesn't even look like the same college that I attended. They had small R2D2 like robots on campus to deliver food to students. WOW. Granted, I was a transplant and a commuter - so I did not experience the full campus experience in Houston, but NO complaints, I got that experience in NOLA. #IYKYK

I learned that the Zealous Zeta Sigma Chapter of Delta's at The University of Houston have been putting on an event called, Yoga on the Yard for the last few years. An event for the Sorority that was open to anyone who wanted to join.
My offering consisted of a journaling session and 60 minute beginner vinyasa flow.

Being Gen Z most of the participants used their phones for their affirmations, but I encouraged them to write them out. Digital is easy, but sometimes you need that DAILY reminder of your positive self talk.
I would like to acknowledge the two Black men who came to class! It always warms my heart to see Black men doing yoga. The stigma is REAL Y'ALL.
As a part of my Yoga Pop-Ups, I have been exploring the connection between Yoga and Aroma Therapy. How they play off and with each other so well, and aid in resetting our nervous system. The regulation of our system in combination with different scents.
Each Pop-Up has it's own scent and this one was no different. Because I was doing this event for the Delta's, I wanted to make something exclusive FOR THEM - but not anything that went against licensing or trademarks. I DO NOT have time for all of that. After speaking with one of my bestfriends', who also happens to be a Delta, I decided on the "African Violet and Bamboo" scent for their candle.
At the time, UH Men's Basketball was on a NCAA March Madness run so the energy in the city and on the campus was electric and contagious. So, NATURALLY I named the candle "COOGS' HOUSE".
Aum Yoga Candles, "Light the Fire Within". [I just noticed I need to redo these labels as the apostrophe is in the wrong place. smh]
I also had some Black Yogi racerback tanks and T-shirts available in a new color. In an ode to UH, they are now available in Red and White.

Meet Me on the Ma'at y'all.
